Chiropractic Care & Pregnancy

We’re excited to add the Webster Technique into our practice and to start serving our pregnant patients in an even greater capacity. Dr. Emily is certified in the Webster Technique and is currently accepting new patients.

What is the Webster Technique?

It’s a chiropractic analysis and adjustment used to remove the interference of the nervous system via removing subluxations to help optimize the mother’s pelvis, sacrum and surrounding ligaments. Chiropractic care isn’t just for pain it’s key to the normal physiological function of the body’s ability to be healthy.

History of Webster Technique

Dr. Larry Webster discovered this technique in 1978 and he founded the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) which is the organization that has been teaching and certifying chiropractors in the Webster Technique since 2000. He developed this specific sacral adjustment to help balance the pelvic muscles and ligaments and potentially improve the birth outcome. The ICPA has always defined the Webster technique as a specific and valuable diversified adjusting technique to be used on all weight bearing individuals including the pregnant population throughout pregnancy to reduce the pelvic subluxation.

“In pregnancy, adjustments provide a double value. As a mother strengthens her resilience in handling the stress response, her nervous system functions in a greater state of ease. This directly affects the baby’s developing nervous system as well.”

-Pathways to Family Wellness, Issue 59

The Webster Technique starts with an analysis of sacral alignment, followed by a correction of a light force thrust applied to the sacrum.

If the subluxation of the sacrum isn’t taken care of, it causes tightening of pelvic muscles and ligaments, which can produce tension on the uterus. It is this tension on the uterus that can prevent baby from moving comfortably into position required for birthing. The tension can also affect labor progression, leading to unnecessary interventions.

It’s a gentle and effective technique in balancing the pelvis, sacrum and ligaments. When balance is restored it contributes to a safer and more comfortable birth for mother and child.

Other possible benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy

  • Shorter labor time
  • An increase in neural communication
  • More room for baby to grow
  • Improved energy levels
  • Fewer interventions
